Studying the differential expression analysis in potato exposed to the biostimulant TARAVERT EVO

Goal
The R+D deparment of the company Antonio Tarazona SLU was interested in studying how the treatment with the biostimulant TARAVERT EVO modified gene expression patterns in Solanum tuberosum.
Approach
At AllGenetics, we studied a group of plants treated with the biostimulant and a group of control, untreated plants. We extracted RNA from each individual and mRNA libraries were prepared. We pooled the mRNA libraries and sequenced them in the NovaSeq 6000 platform to obtain 5 gigabases of raw data per sample. The high-throughput sequencing results were analysed using our RNA-seq bioinformatic pipeline and a number of differentially expressed genes were identified. To do so we used the Solanum tuberosum reference genome.
Results
The RNA-seq experiment identified a total of 3474 differentially expressed genes, of which 1456 genes were down-regulated and 2018 genes were up-regulated in treated plants compared to control plants. Interestingly, the gene ontology analysis revealed that most of the differentially expressed genes belonged to the following categories: response to stress, reproduction, cellular nitrogen compound metabolic process, biosynthetic process, and anatomical structure development. This research is key to understanding the mechanisms of action of the biostimulant under study and to further develop its agricultural applications.
