AllGenetics welcomes new PhD student from the VIROINF MSCA Innovative Training Network

AllGenetics is pleased to announce the arrival of Yasas Wijesekara, a PhD student from the VIROINF Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action (MSCA) Innovative Training Network.

Yasas Wijesekara, who hails from Sri Lanka, has a background in microbiology, computational biology, and machine learning, and he is currently conducting his research at the Universitätsmedizin Greifswald in Germany.

Yasas’s PhD project focuses on harnessing the power of artificial intelligence to identify novel viruses in genome and metagenome sequencing data. This cutting-edge research aims to enhance the understanding of viral diversity and the complex dynamics of viruses across different biomes.

AllGenetics is delighted to host Yasas this month, providing an excellent opportunity for the exchange of knowledge on bioinformatics, particularly on the metagenomics of bacteriophages. During his PhD, Yasas has developed various bioinformatic tools to enhance the detection and characterisation of bacteriophages, surpassing the performance of existing tools.

During his time with us, Yasas will be collaborating in our bioinformatics area under the supervision of Dr Neus Marí-Mena. We look forward to a fruitful collaboration and the advancements that will arise from this partnership.
